This film deserved every award it got tonight, and so did you!

Hell yeah!!!! This was a perfect blend of one of his more serious movies (Devil's Backbone?) and his fantasy movies (Pacific Rim) and it garnered him an Oscar!!!! Kudos to 1 of my favorite directors!!!!! Viva los latinooooos!

Del Toro deserved more to win for Pan's labyrinth

Yes I am happy for him.

Based on the various clips that were shown throughout the Oscars telecast, this is definitely the movie of the last year I'd most like to see.

The film was the disappointment of the year for me - gorgeous to look at, as his movies always are, but I was not moved at all. But del Toro is such a likeable guy that I don't begrudge him this moment. It's my least favourite Best Picture winner since Crash, but I can always pretend he won for The Devil's Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth.

This movie certainly looks intriguing on the basis of its uniqueness and visual artistry and beauty. The other multiple-Oscars nominated movie that the shown clips got me feeling most curious about is Dunkirk; I really was impressed by what was shown for it and very much would like to see it eventually.

If you can only pick one, I'd go for "Shape". I'm not sure it was "Best Picture" worthy but it's a solid film. "Dunkirk" is certainly worth a look too, but I found it too detached - though I'm fairly sure this was what Nolan was going for.

Mind you, the only other 2 nominees that I have any interest in are "Get Out" and "Three Billboards".

Other than the truly lousy Darkest Hour (and The Post I haven't seen yet) all of this year's Best Picture nominees are at least worth a look. Lady Bird and Call Me by Your Name are my personal favourites of the clutch, with Three Billboards right behind. Phantom Thread, Get Out and Dunkirk are all good although I wouldn't list any of them among my favourites of the year.

I think The Devil's Backbone is his finest achievement, but Pan's would have been a worthy choice. But, this being the Academy, they won't give him a Best Director Oscar for one of his Spanish-language movies, superior though they may be.
