The Academy went out of it's way this year to let everyone know: "We're not genuflecting at the feet of old white men". Even the dude who won Best Actor had a Spanish name, Joaquin. Next year, The Hollywood Foreign Press will be back to their normal, creeming their tighty whiteys over Spielberg and Hank's latest(and no less forgettable) exercise in bloated, woefully overhyped kitsch

You kinda touched on something I was thinking. Given the state of recent politics, that orange man ruling our country, his influence on foreign affairs and foreign immgrants, I felt a foreign movie winning the big awards was some kind of "statement". If so, it was a LAME statement.

Don't get me wrong, saw Parasite a few weeks ago in theaters and it was a GREAT movie, but found 1917, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and even Joker better films all around.

I've been posting quite a bit lately, but anyway, I wanted to respond to this thread. I've been critical of aspects of this film here in the past, but bottom line: I don't think Scorsese needs this work validated by the Academy. He's been there, done that. He won a Best Director Oscar for The Departed (which I feel was probably the least deserving of all of M.S.'s nominated films) some years back. This was most likely a watershed film for Scorsese in that it united numerous familiar actors he's worked with, probably for the last time. For example, I don't know if Joe Pesci will act anymore, and The Irishman is quite special in that regard. The Oscars are nice, and I guess fulfilling, but for decades, Scorsese excelled in the space that existed without one on his shelf.

AMPAS exists to promote studio films and A-list talent. Every once in a while they throw a bone to a foreign filmmaker and of course coincidentally there's talk of a US remake of Parasite so it only makes sense that they would hype the sh!t out of the movie.

The zeitgeist of woke America is generally reflected in voting of AMPAS members but since Oscar awards ratings drop every year, they're going to have to make a decision about being political and preachy OR maintaining their influence on the domestic film audience.

I think they had a 6 million drop this year from last year. Wonder why....

Yeah, we don't need a biased, ego celebrating, commercially stereotypical awards show to tell us Marty rocks.

We know he rocks.

I think we know why. And Gervais made it very clear at the Golden Globes event.

I'm like the guys from that band King Missile. Did you know they have a song praising Scorsese and his films?

Can't say I've ever heard of them. But I just listened to one of their tracks on Spotify and it was pretty funny. What's the Scorsese song called?

Edit: Don't worry, I found it. That was funny as hell.

Well considering the new guidelines for the Oscars per 2024 this will prevent movies like The Irishman or like 99% of all the past winners of the Oscars won't be eligible to be nominated since the Oscars find it more important to have representation than actual quality.

Annnnnnnnd the death of Hollywood slowly continues. But hey its cool, long as we have enough trans black actresses working thats all that really matters right.
