This was a highly overrated movie... Wow... I get it, it's stylised violence, but it's the same scene repeated.. That's it... There is nothing else to it...
Boring movie... The cliché sentimental bits about his wife and unborn child don't add much either... Groan...
Out of the Furnace handled the economic hardship themes much better as well as the heartbreak and while its violence was more realistic and not as stylised and gory, it meant more... you felt the consequences of people's actions more... also, you felt that the characters were real people, not just some cartoon... i know, the point of this film is that they are cartoons, but why make it so long and boring?!
The Raid has better fighting... This was way too drawn out and highly overrated... I don't get the praise... His earlier film, Bone Tomahawk was better... Hobo with a Shotgun was much better, more outrageous and fun 😎
The best scene in this film isn't any of the kills, it's when he beats up his car... Just watch the trailer, skip the movie...

@mechajutaro I think yoyu may have misunderstood me, his earlier film was Bone Tomahawk... Hobo with a Shotgun was directed by another person, I only referred to it as it is also an violent "exploitation" type film...
Apologies for the confusion...

I disagree, I found this really engaging. Besides the fact it's the same director, the comparisons to Bone Tomahawk aren't relevant really, they're very different films (although I loved that one too). This is bleaker, the colour palette is drab, and the script minimalist too, but there's a steely determination in the protagonist and a sense of tremendous injustice against him that really makes you want to follow the story through and see him come out the other side (if only for a moment...!) I think the overall rating of around a 7/10 is fair. This is much better than a lot of the shit we see garner higher numbers.

It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread but it was definitely a movie worth watching. The storyline leading up to all the violence is a bit cliche and drawn out, for sure. A lot of that fluff could've been executed with a little more pace but once we get to the prison, well, all I can say is gratuitous violence is pretty damn cool!
Comparing the fights in this to The Raid is pretty much chalk and cheese. One's just raw brutality while the other is skilled carnage. Both highly entertaining in their own mindless right.

I thought it was great. It was recapturing the feel of those old Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson films of the 70's but with a bit of grindhouse mixed in.
Yes, Hobo With a Shotgun and Bone Tomahawk were better but it's still gripping stuff and different to both. I felt Hobo was more 80's than 70's and more Troma than grindhouse.

Yeah, Hobo stood on its own as a good 80s nostalgia flick with good levels of gore but Brawl was something else, with the more visceral breaking of bodies. Can't say I approved much of the cranial destruction from a handgun, in the reality department but hey, it's a movie. It's not meant to be real!
Let's hope we see more of this.
