I agree Gattaca was better, especially given the time, but this was a pretty solid offering. I didn't realize they were the same filmmaker/writer. I'll have to check out some of his other (though seemingly less-good) work.

He's done loads of solid stuff tbf, think OP maybe just rates Gattaca too highly? :P
