For a great evil to come to be, there should have been something really dark. I think simply 'scare tactics' like doors openly of their own accord have had their day (they don't scare anymore.)
Imagine if they took it to a dark place like the daughter was part of a satanic pedophile ring? That the 'doll maker' was obsessed with dolls because he was obsessed with little girls? That the wife turned a blind eye? That would make Annabelle want to haunt them for sure.
But there was no real motive. The flashback started good and then they said that they just wished her back to life. That's it? No witch doctors? No blasphemies with satanic churches to bring her back to life?

They could have taken it somewhere darker, but I don't think Annabelle (their daughter, Bee) is haunting them at all. It's a demon that took advantage of the door they oppened, and who took, sometimes, the form of their daughter, to screw with them (I know it also takes it in front of the lead girl but then it takes other forms as well).

I know its the devil but the devil wouldn't just appear. I wanted something darker. Maybe they hire a satanist to try and bring her back to life in the doll and the devil comes instead. I think the writing was lazy for a 'creation' story.
