I read a synopsis about this movie talking about the creation of the Anabelle doll by a toymaker. Since the real Annabelle Doll is a Raggedy Anne Doll produced by Knickerbocker, this begs the question why make such an obviously fictional origin for a real object?

Well, they didn't even want to use the likeness of the real Annabelle doll. Don't want to screw the company, or scare the children who have that kind of doll?.
This is just a completely fictional story taking as inspiration the Annabelle story I guess. So was the first movie, wasn't it?. They haven't yet done a movie about the real story. I think it's only referenced in the second Conjuring movie.

(Sign) I guess they did as much of the actual story they got from the Warrens in the beginning of the first Conjuring movie. I guess no one is bothering to do anymore research on the Annabelle doll past that, hence the Annabelle movies gone to completely fictional stories to start/keep a new franchise.

You're right, it was the first Conjuring movie. They really could (and should!) make that a whole movie yet.
