Discuss Suburbicon

The movie is about a murder for hire and insurance fraud, but the town is more focused on the black family. No one in this town is even bothered by the home invasion, murder, the sister of the dead woman moving in with the widow, the sister in law changed her hair color to look exactly like the dead wife. The entire town is so mad at the black couple that they don't pay any attention to a murder going on in the middle of a well lit street. I think the story is parallel to the bad comments online, in that no one gives one shiat about the main story, but are more offended by them throwing in a racial subplot.

German cabaret was not very successful at stopping the Nazis.(I am paraphrasing Ben Elton.) Where does this idea that political opinion is a good thing to be inserted into otherwise irrelevant entertainment come from?

People resent it not because they are defending 'whiteness' (or 'maleness' or 'straightness' or whatever) but because they resent being patronised by celebrities who, for no good reason, seem to think they know better than us dumb audiences. If writers and directors really want to pull us out of our suspension of disbelief, then a quick detour into political commentary will do it. That is anti drama. And I don't even know where to begin to understand why someone would insert serious political commentary into a comedy that has nothing to do with the story being told or even, amazingly, contemporary society.

And what is worse is that this sort of commentary isn't actually an instantiation of free speech and expression. The range of expression that makes it onto our screens is exceedingly narrow. The same people who encourage this sort of thing seem also to be the same people who will 'no platform' a performer they disagree with.

I doubt you would be defending political commentary in comedies if the politics being pushed ran in opposition to your own. You either allow that as a general principle or reject it as such.

Calling people racist btw isn't like accusing them of littering or having poor table manners. It's a heinous accusation. To do so on no evidence whatever, or merely because the person has different beliefs to yourself, is itself an injustice.

Wow. Um, I don't know what you're talking about. Nor have I the slightest inclination to put the energy into making any sense of anything you just wrote, let alone bothering to address any of your points.

If it's any consolidation to you, you probably wouldn't have appreciated whatever I might have written any more than you did that to which you just responded - the good news is, at least, now, you don't have to waste your time replying to me anymore.

DRDMovieMusings. I have suspected for most of this thread that you were an actual troll, but stood by the rule of charitable interpretation. Glad that you outed yourself in the end, because I can now put you into ignore. Have a great life.

Funny, I was thinking the same about you, so, likewise.

You really haven’t been paying attention to the anti-white component of the zeitgeist lately. Have you even noticed how there’s never any fuss over a POC making patently racist comments while even just a hint of anything to do with race from white person gets them crucified immediately.

Did you happen to see Issa Rae last year at an awards show saying that she was rooting for all the black people? How about Don Lemon asserting that white men are the biggest terror threat in the US? Get on Twitter some time and search “white men extinct,” if you really want to see where we stand in the court of public opinion.

As for Heather Heyer, she died playing in the street and not paying attention to her surroundings. “Taking a stand against white supremacy,” LOL. You know how many deaths there would have been if ANTIFA and BLM didn’t show up to that peaceful demonstration? Zero.

There’s FAR more actual racism aimed at whites than anyone else as of late, and we’re not even allowed to defend ourselves. The KKK is a joke. The notion that “white supremacy” is even remotely a significant motivating force in the U.S. is laughable.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't so scary that there are people out there who actually think this way.

At any rate, hanks for sharing your opinion.

You might want to consider why, if the core story is, as you claim,

Yeah, except it's not what "I claim", it's what the makers of the movie themselves claim. Sorry, but that is reality. Please feel free to join us.

The simple answer is that it reflects what the movie is actually about.

Simpler still is to just listen to the makers of the movie talk about their intentions in interviews. Spoiler alert - they said it's about racism. Sorry to spoil your rogue narrative.

It's garbage. It attempted to mash up some commentary about race hate with some kind of spoof of Double Indemnity or similar. Not even close to being funny, Serial Mom it aint. Absolutely tone deaf in every regard.

And what is it with Clooney's obsession with this period anyway? It's a beautiful looking movie but pointless.

You know it was based on a true story, right?

Woah, any online resources about this?

The Real-Life Racial Battle That Inspired George Clooney’s ‘Suburbicon’

Having finally gotten around to seeing this, true story aside, the movie was not every good. You hire someone to kill your wife, whose faces your sister-law/lover and son will see, and you don't demand that they wear masks? Why even wake the kid up and have him see the killer's faces in the first place? No wonder these idiots got caught.

But I think we can all agree that the race plot and the murder plot would have worked better as separate movies and not mashed together. Now if you will excuse me, I am off to make a movie about a light hearted baking contest set across the street from a concentration camp.
