Oh my God, didn't you just hate her?!

I didn't like Christine "Lady Bird" more. She was a horrible human being who lied, cheated and stole to get ahead in life, and who everyone forgave too easily in spite of her being a bitch to everyone around her the entire time. Jenna to me just wanted to fit in with everyone else at her school. If this movie is supposed to be semi-autobiographical as Greta Gerwig states, it doesn't speak well of her as a person.

But Jenna mocked suicides! And she was the instigator of the car prank.

Christine was still worse.

No, she wasn't. Joking about suicide is worse than anything Lady Bird did

Someone who purposely lies, cheats, steals and uses people vs someone who makes an offhand comment? We have different standards we hold people up to.

Two offhand comments- and Jenna was the biggest user in this film! And she lied and cheated too, and there was no stealing, wtf?? And what about Kyle...

She steals the math grade book and she shoplifts a magazine. Don't make me rewatch this film just so I can list every despicable act Lady Bird does throughout the course of the movie.

Oh yeah, I remember the magazine now- but the grade book? Has anyone NOT done that, whether by accident or by design?? And wasn't she trying to impress Jenna when she did all her crazy stuff- not an excuse, no, but it hardly gives Jenna the moral high ground over her.

I liked Julie, Danny, and the parents, and the staff, and her bro's girlfriend, and I didn't mind Lady Bird or her bro

I have to say I found Christine really unpleasant, someone I would avoid like the plague both as a youth and an adult. Completely self absorbed and either oblivious or uncaring about how her actions impact on others.

I didn't connect with the entire film as a result of the lead character and the mother both unpleasant. Some may call them human, with human flaws, but I just call them unpleasant. In most scenes I felt so sorry for the father being surrounded by those pair for the rest of his days.

As for Jenna, she was just a simple girl who wanted to live a simple life. I find that less objectionable. Confusingly I dont think Jenna and Christine were a million miles apart by the end. Christine seemed to realise that a lot of her actions were petulant, juvenile and hurtful and that perhaps respecting people who pursue a simple life was something she could aspire to.

Still, it was a diverting enough study. A film doesn't need to have a sympathetic character in order to hold your attention.

6/10

A simple girl who made extremely problematic comments about suicide, and was bullyish towards Julie and the nun?? She was a horror!

Well yes, she was portrayed as immature, brattish and unsympathetic - but lots of kids have a phase like that when growing up. Christine was, in my mind, equally immature and brattish but it seems the director wanted us to empathise with her?

Christine knew her father had lost his job and suffering with long running depression, but instead of pursuing a more affordable local college/university she insisted on going to the east coast on a whim and emotionally blackmail her father into deeper debt.

A fitting end to the film would have been Christine hearing her family had had to give up their home, that her father had committed suicide as a result and then Jenna making a tasteless joke about it!

Christine saw the error of her ways, Jenna and Kyle didn't
