Discuss Aftermath

Short Term Conflict Alert (STCA) was not online at Skyguide that night, because the primary radar was offline for maintenance, and STCA was not available on the backup system. However the trailer represents an STCA warning seconds before the accident (it would have warned much sooner than that, had it been operational).

Peter Nielsen (no doubt not his name in the movie) was not tossing off, drinking coffee as if on a break, during the events. He was distracted by another unscheduled flight, and unable to resolve the issues with it because the phone system was being worked on and the backup phone system had a technical problem and was disabled. He was also working alone, due to Skyguide's policy or letting one of the two scheduled controllers take an "extended break" during low traffic hours.

Pilots do NOT just suddenly decide to descend to 10,000 feet because "hey, we haven't heard from you for a minute". The reason both planes were at the same altitude and got close was because the controller was distracted and forgot to separate them. An altitude of 10K would be inappropriate anyway, as neither of them were anywhere close to making an approach for landing. But, hey, since they are changing the airlines, changing the flight numbers and changing the location, why not?

This didn't happen in Ohio (The airport is named "Mid-Ohio International, but probably meant to depict Columbus International or Hopkins International). It happened over Uberlingen, Germany, on the southern border.

Vitaly Kaloyev was accurately depicted as an architect, but he lost his wife and a son and a daughter, not just wife and daughter. And his daughter was not pregnant, she was much too young. This was added for dramatics.

There is no way in HELL that VK was present during the search for, and removal of bodies phase of the investigation. Dramatics again.

The amount of persecution PN received during the investigation seems to have been exaggerated a bit. Also for dramatics.

Who knows for sure yet, but the trailer seems to indicate VK and PN both had guns, and had them in preparation for the inevitable showdown between them. Is a shoot-out likely to be depicted? In reality VK showed PN a picture of his kids in coffins and tried to get an apology. Upon realizing an apology was not forthcoming, he stabbed PN. This all occured in PN's backyard, not at his front door.

Yeah, yeah. I know. "It's a movie". I know. It's not even a movie, it's a movie trailer. Incomplete and highly edited.

But, assuming there are many more instances of "dramatic licence" to come here, it's looking to be a catastrophe at least as horrible as the accident which "inspired" it.

Here is a link to an episode of Mayday, which is much more accurate than anything we will get in this over-dramatic waste of time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZixPCeG4ss

I agree. The movie was so bad I would rather have watched a doc. That said, some of the inaccuracies don't seem like they ended up as inaccurate as you had thought. It looks like they stuck kinda close to the facts, but you are correct, it was an over-dramatic waste of time.

It looks godawful. Why they hired Arnold I'll never know. Arnold cannot act, he just can't. The best he's capable is a kind of clenched, depressed look and that's it. I have a feeling he lobbied hard for the role to try to develop a post-action hero niche for himself.

All those years he could have been working to improve his craft, he didn't. (I admire Daniel Radcliffe, for instance, whom I thought was a rather stunted actor in the HP movies but who has worked diligently to improve his acting.)

I don't even care if the film is accurate or not. Putting a stiff muscleman in the role that should be occupied by a nuanced, everyman actor will guarantee that the movie will draw more eye rolls and unintended laughter than critical acclaim. It's funny that the film cost only $10M, which used to be half of what Arnold would charge for his salary alone. Boy, has he taken a pay cut!

I'm betting the Rottentomatoes score comes in under 30%, with a few reviewers giving Schwarzenegger too much credit for trying to take on more serious roles.

EDIT: LOL I didn't even know it had been released! It's got a 56% score on the IMDB (which means nothing, really) and managed a miraculous 37% score on RT. Only 39% of the audience liked it. (MAN that is a low score!) I can't even find any data on its earnings on Box Office Mojo, which means it's minuscule. And as I predicted, the only positives on RT are people who specifically call out Schwarzenegger's move towards more serious roles.

He produced it. ;)

Thanks for the link. That brief coverage was much better than the movie. What I don't understand is why writers/directors decide to mess with details of what is already such a compelling story. I think the film would have been much more compelling had they stuck to the real details on the family specifically.

The two shockers from the YouTube vid vs. the film:

1) The father had absolutely no remorse for what he did. That is crazy.

2) There was no post-release showdown between the killer father and surviving child. I'm guessing that was fabrication.

I don't know who the picture was trying to paint as the bad guy (if there indeed was supposed to be a bad guy at all) but it certainly wasn't the air traffic controller. It came across more like everyone being a victim - except for that "take-the-deal-or-you'll-get-nothing" d-bag lawyer. The Netflix tagline reads "... a broken man embarks on a quest for the only thing he has left: revenge." Watching the movie I was thinking "Arnie's going to take revenge on that poor guy? Really?" I should have just watched the Mayday episode instead. Love that show.

depressing flick

Old link is dead. This seems like the same video, but I think it's called "Seconds from Disaster". Anyway, for anyone who may be interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u541gY2sMZ0
