To dive for the Coelacanth is to go back in time. In 1938, when it was known only as a fossil, a Coelacanth was discovered in South Africa in a fisherman's net. This species bears witness to an evolutionary bifurcation 380 million years ago, and bears the marks of a great event: the day the fish left the ocean for the open air. Does it hold the secret to the transition to walking on land? In 2010, a marine biologist and outstanding diver, Laurent Ballesta, took the first photographs of the Coelacanth in its ecosystem. In April 2013, divers and researchers set down their equipment at the Sodwana base camp in South Africa, in the club founded by Peter Timm (who died in 2014). Six weeks of extreme diving at depths of over 120 meters, in an attempt to film the Coelacanth with a double-headed camera, collect its DNA and tag a subject with a satellite-linked beacon...

Plonger vers le Cœlacanthe c'est remonter le temps. En 1938, alors qu'il n'était connu qu’à l’état de fossile, un Cœlacanthe est découvert en Afrique du Sud dans les filets d’un pêcheur. Cette espèce est le témoin d'une bifurcation évolutive qui date de 380 millions d'années et porte en elle les marques d'un grand événement : celui du jour où le poisson quitta l'océan pour gagner l'air libre. Détient-elle le secret le passage à la marche terrestre ? En 2010, un biologiste marin et plongeur hors pair, Laurent Ballesta, réalise les premières photographies du Cœlacanthe dans son écosystème. En avril 2013, plongeurs et chercheurs posent leur matériel au camp de base de Sodwana, en Afrique du Sud dans le club fondé par Peter Timm (Décédé en 2014). Six semaines de plongées extrêmes à plus de 120 mètres de profondeur, pour tenter de filmer le Cœlacanthe grâce à une caméra à deux têtes, prélever son ADN et marquer un sujet avec une balise reliée à un satellite...

Er galt bereits als ausgestorben, bis man in den 30er Jahren dieses lebende Fossil zum ersten Mal sah. Der Quastenflosser ist ein Relikt aus prähistorischer Zeit, der in kaum zugänglichen Tiefen des Meeres zu Hause ist. Man hält ihn für den Übergang vom Meeres- zum Landbewohner, denn in seinen Flossen fand man die Art von Knochen, aus denen sich die Extremitäten der ersten Landtiere entwickelten.
