Discuss Shepherds and Butchers

Just finished watching this and was pleasantly surprised. Steve Coogan was terrific in this. The scenes where they showed the men defecating and urinating during their execution just made me want to hurl. I tend to really enjoy court case dramas, and this didn't disappoint. I was expecting Andrea Riseborough to have a bigger role, but I liked her quiet role as the prosecutor.

Am completely unfamiliar with South African law, so it was interesting to hear all the moments where they were not allowed to discuss what goes on in the gallows. Pretty simple story, but I enjoyed it.

I mostly agree with you, although strong as Coogan's performance was, I couldn't help but see him as a parody of himself, acting one of his impressions from The Trip.

I found the film targeted too many moral sins with a broad brush, laid it on a bit thick, and ended up with a clumsy overall picture as a result (eg. the brother in law/ the drinking/ the domestic abuse/ the parallel with the military). But yeah, it was easily watchable and still somewhat moving. I'd still recommend it.
