Über Hidden Figures - Unerkannte Heldinnen diskutieren

I finally saw this and as I can wish to be on board with the majority, I cannot. I found it to be highly overrated. It felt too much like a Lifetime/Hallmark movie. It was heavily cliched and overly manipulative to the point where I saw its beats coming from a mile away and not to mention, heavily inaccurate, having read the book in which this was based on. The acting was spot on but the script and direction...not so much.

I might be one of the few who hated the movie. A total disappointment on so many levels in a movie that has so much potential and they took the easy way out and dumb down this truly inspirational story of these women, which deserves a WAY better movie.

Didn't hate it, but it was so generic. I thought most of the acting was good, but I agree it was overrated.

There's a lot of reasons movies can be overrated, but these days one people fail to realize is the answer to the question: would you ever have a reason to watch this movie again? If the answer is no, and the movie is hyped or rated high, then it's not that good.

It was okay, but like you say, it was like a lifetime movie. That said, personally, I liked it more than Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.

I found it very unbelievable. There were many scenes where one of the protagonists would get all emotional or deliver a passionate speech and suddenly magically win over their oppressors and be granted their wish. Sentimentalized, Hollywoodland manipulation. I'm sure I'd find the real story far more interesting.

Someone, I forget who, described it as "The Help in space" LOL.

I haven't seen The Help, so I couldn't say.

I didn't either. I refuse to watch it.

I've watched both films and I can say that "The Help" and "Hidden Figures" are "bookend films." That is, we get to see the low end ("The Help") and the possible high end ("Hidden Figures") of life for African Americans, specifically women at the dawn of the struggle for civil rights. The low end characters have basic skills and make basic pay. The high end characters have exceptional skills that (may) garner high (for the time) pay. Yes, it did occur to me that "Hidden Figures" has enough points in common that "The Help In Space" could sum up the movie in "a Hollywood sentence." As a failure at Math, I stand in awe of people who can "get it right the first time, every time" in technical matters. In short, Great characters, Great story,;)
