Discuss The Void

Both their theme and style are very similar, which is a good thing. It was kinda like Event Horizon but on Earth not space and it had an atmosphere and vibe quite similar to Let Us Prey . Though I haven't seen E.H. in a couple years , but remember it well and Let Us Prey had that eerie something that crawled over me making it's permanent mark in my mind.

The Void had a lot of stuff going on and I liked it, but it sorta lost me a little when it went all wacky, it lacked clarity and felt a tad rushed and a bit contrived now that I'm looking back on the film. A lot of what happened in the beginning was disconnected to the latter half of the film, the mad "doctor" and the so not clever twist of the pregnant woman in the lobby, I saw that coming the second in which they were "locked" in there, idk it had really cool NON -CGI gore which was definitely interesting for a change and the undead Doc and his plan to...uh wtf was he doing exactly, parallel dimension connectivity and the soooooo important role of the 2,000lb beast that ripped its way out of the womb of the woman, I was like, huh? But then I was distracted by ridiculousness of the thing chasing the guy and boom the wall closed up, seriously wtf? But wait at the very end the dude and his girl are in another time and place, not hell, but not comfy looking for humans, no wifi for sure and where did the Doc go? Didn't the guy hurl the Doc into the triangle port with himself? Idk I think a solid 6/10 as it certainly didn't fail to entertain at all and had great actual effects, that "beasty thing" will be in my mind for a while. It was like a combo of like 12 different animals AND species, lol.

I thought this movie was probably a combination of several other horror movies. Take your pick of any H.P. Lovecraft movie (Re-Animator, From Beyond, In the Mouth of Madness), The Thing, Prince of Darkness, Hellraiser, Nightbreed, Phantasm, Event Horizon (as you said), etc. I could go on but this post would be long. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie as a whole. The special effects were great and the acting wasn't horrible like most horror movies are today. I would recommend this movie to any horror fan as a great watch late at night. Just don't expect anything original lol.

Definite "Lovecraftian" layer through the film and looking back the beast visually reminds me as something directly out of an H.P.L. flick or story. The real effects was part of the reason, but the actual beast is exactly like something he would have described in his stories with all it's gangly bits. That and the cultish group that doesn't kill them or threaten them directly, instead it let's them know something terrible is coming their way inside and that they were screwed, it was very foreboding.

Going down to the basements sub basement, of all things to do ,was NOT a very wise choice, lol, classic horror flick character flaws I guess. I would have locked myself in a broom closet or up in a drop ceiling or possibly a football locker as if I would fit, but I woulda tried. My classic all time horror flick survival trick at night that has never been used (and the bad sh!t always goes down at night) is to find any small sharp instrument for quick cuts to throats and go to the darkest place I could find and find myself a nice corner, left and right and especially your ass would all be covered, stay quiet and if it comes to it hopefully you managed to find that piece of glass or screw driver, lol. That would be a dull film though, very, very dull.
Oh wait my even bigger pet peeve is using a flashlight, I'll be screaming ** Turn Off Your Damn Flashlights FFS!! It's shows your position! You Idiots!! ** That is my biggest pet peeve that occurs in just about 2/3 of all horror flicks is of course the light flickers on and off at the worst time possible and they have to smack it as it flickers like it's from the 80's and had a few cheap @ss D cell batteries in it or something. I mean I bought a 5 LED push button on/off keychain flashlight at the damn dollar store for exactly a dollar and I practically went blind when I looked at the thing, but I digress. Horror needs to get more psychological and smarter, more inventive instead of rehashing the same crap 5+ times, there is always the Indie horror, flicks that are 1,000 times better, badder, far more entertaining and make us think a little, not that Hollyweird formula.

I would say it is more Hellraiser with The Thing as far as direction of the body horror design. And in general the feeling is more of those low budget horror movies from the 80's. But this movie is lacking any real substance and meaning, it's just empty with few scare jumps and annoying characters. The result is a bit boring, so low expectations are needed.
