I was excited about seeing this movie. It finally became available for rent so I watched last night. I'm a big Kennedy fan --- I was 7 years old at the time of the assassination. While I liked the way the movie switched back and forth through time --- I just didn't like it overall. Natalie Portman did not come across that well as Jackie. If anything, her interpretation seemed extremely bitchy with the Life reporter. But most of it was physical -- for one thing Portman was too short for the role. Couldn't they think of a way for the men not to tower over her -- stand her on a box or something? The wigs looked like wigs --- way too puffy. I can get past the physical stuff if the acting is good but I just didn't think Portman was very convincing as Jackie. However, the movie did raise a very unsettling emotion in me. I knew that Jackie came up with the Camelot bit....but what if everything else she said was a lie or exaggeration too? I remember listening to the tapes of when she talked to the Life reporter and told about how JFK knelt in prayer every night. I don't think this was in the movie but now I wonder....did she basically lie about everything to make JFK look great for history? Anyway, it doesn't matter to me that much because no matter what I'll always think JFK was a great president. This movie was a let down to me.

I went in with very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised... it's not a masterpiece, but it is far more intimate and expressive than I expected it to be... a lot of mood and atmosphere and I like the idea that it leaves us feeling ambivalent about what is true and what is myth when it comes to how we perceive JFK and indeed Jackie herself...

For the most part I was very impressed, particularly by Portman - by all accounts she nailed the character, and while the candid scenes were clearly based on speculation and hearsay, for the most part it rang true to me. Not a great picture by any means, but it was a great performance, the first time I've ever been impressed by this actress in a leading role. The haunting music score is also worthy of note.
