The five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2017 are (in alphabetical order):
Who do you think should win for best director this year?
Of the nominees, I've only seen Dunkirk and Get Out so far and can say that what Nolan acheived in Dunkirk towers above Peele's work in Get Out... I really want to see the others before Oscar time...
Any interesting omissions?
I haven't seen these two, but no nominations for either Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread), nor Speilberg (The Post)... Interesting...

I have also only seen Dunkirk and Get Out. Three Billboards opened this weekend, The Shape of Water in a couple of weeks and Lady Bird not until the end of February. While I enjoyed both films, I agree that Nolan deserves it more than Peele. Neither, however, is a particularly note-worthy achievement. Dunkirk deserves a few technical awards, no doubt.
My favourites from those I have seen so far, which of course were both overlooked here, are Blade Runner 2049 and Call Me by Your Name. At least Denis Villeneuve and Luca Guadagnino have been deservedly nominated at the BAFTAs. Sean Baker (The Florida Project) and James Gray (The Lost City of Z) would be my runners-up for now.
Looking forward to seeing Phantom Thread. The Post has been doing less well than expected on the awards circuit so far but I still think it will be catnip to the Oscars who will give it several nominations - wins not looking likely, however.

James Gray (The Lost City of Z) is probably the most overlooked director this year... it's such a cinematic and engrossing film... Good call... No one mentions it!
