For the most part, on-screen Elaine came across as a woman who was new to magic and just wanted to find love, whereas voice-over Elaine came across as more harsh and selfish. For example, when Wayne dies, Elaine appears upset, but in the voice-over, she seems cold and uncaring.
I read an interview where the director talked about how she added in the narration during post-production after realizing that Elaine didn't come across sociopathic enough. So then, this would explain the disconnect between the two aspects of the character.
I think this is the main weakness of the film. Elaine's characterization felt very inconsistent to me, and I was never quite sure about her intentions or motivations.

This is an interesting point to make. However I didn't get that impression, although I can see how someone could. What I took away from it was that she acted more innocent with well-intent, and the narrative gives us confirmation that she was not truly so. I think watching her act like you'd expect someone to react, and just looking for love, makes her seem even more unhinged when we hear the callous and unfeeling voice of her narrative. The fact that they don't match makes it more unsettling and interesting for me at least. Her selfishness and tunnel-vision drive to find true love leads her to do one terrible thing after another, never stopping to question the morality of her actions as a means to an end. I do see how you can view it another way which makes it a good discussion point and also a really fun film overall. I love when things aren't so clear and straightforward. If it was an oversight on the directors part I think it worked in her favor!
