Casino Royale was great but everything else has been terrible, OK and boring.

This rendition of Bond arose not only post-Bourne, but post 9/11 when the notion of fun was less welcome in spy fiction

I think if the Bond producers are smart they'll repeat the Roger Moore formula and bring in an actor who can provide some comic relief to generate interest in the spy genre again. The Daniel Craig era seemed to take itself too seriously at a time when filmgoers were demanding action films that deliver comedy as well (the Oceans movies, Deadpool, Guy Ritchie movies). If they hire a "comic" bond instead of a stone faced tough guy I think the series would generate renewed interest, just as Roger Moore did with the younger generation who wasn't sold on mom & pop's action hero Connery.

The franchise returning to zaniness and camp seems likely, for the simple fact that this has been the pattern with the Bond movies. We started out kinda sorta gritty with the Connery films, went light hearted with Moore, went hard-edged again with Dalton, went camp again with Brosnan, and the series was at it's most dour during The Craig Era. Dunno that audiences themselves were craving action movies which delivered comedy during this era, at least not insofar as spy movies went. Again, Craig Era Bond arose in conjunction with the equally angsty Bourne films and the unfailingly grisly 24. Mirth in spy movies during this period was shunned, and the folks over at Eon yielded to consumer demands

Life could change immensely between today and whenever the next era of Bond begins, nonetheless our current reality(The War On Terror has ended disastrously for The West. The idea that a lone super-operative with the latest technology at his disposal can set the world right is nowhere near as palpable as it was in '06)doesn't gel with the mindset which undergirded The Craig Era and shows like 24. All of which were products of an era still reeling from 9/11, and still rife with the conviction that there was going to be a simple resolution to turmoil on the world stage . Full-scale escapism in the vein of The Moore and Brosnan days is probably the only way for these movies to go, given such circumstances

True, the state of the world dictates what the audience craves and we don’t know what’s coming next. Seems like things have really gotten pretty bad in the last 5 years so I think escapism (the light hearted, fantasy, comedy kind) will come back in vogue.

Also on a purely demographic note, younger audiences are usually enticed by comedy. Think of Pirates of the Caribbean or any Disney action flick. They wouldn’t be nearly as popular with the kids if they were heavy dramatic stories with no laughs.

With me personally, this is how Roger Moore pulled me into Bond. I was just a kid who couldn’t appreciate Connery’s drama (which I now consider the best, but I’m talking about way back when I was a kid). Along comes Roger Moore with his cheeky humor, and the overall funnier vibe of the films as with the character Jaws, and I was hooked.

I’m sure the bond producers realize this, and that’s also why there’s a cyclical nature to the bond character. You can practically see them behind closed doors analyzing the lagging numbers in the teen-to-early-20s demographic and saying “we need another funny guy.”

I wouldn't call the Brosnan films "camp" just typical of the 90s action hero.

I'm still on #TeamIdrisElba

He was on my very short list before they chose Craig. But now he's a bit 'long in the tooth' for the part now, even if it is/was a 'one & done'. He's almost 50.

You knew Elba pre 2005?

Not personally, but there was this 'little' show called 'The Wire'! Maybe you've heard of it? 🙄 Also, when I still had cable & watched a lot of shows from the UK.
