Discusión First Man

So I watched First Man yesterday (great film btw) and there was one moment/scene that I have no idea what's going on. It's when Janet (Foy) looks out the window and sees that Pat White is standing at the end of her car with the hood up. The scene takes place in '68 so an entire year after her husband's death. (I have no idea why she'd still be living with other astronauts' families.) Anyway as Janet approaches her there are several newspapers on the ground which I think shows us that she has 'given up' and doesn't care about the outside world anymore. We see that Pat is staring at a spare wheel? Then the neighbors act like they're giving her the cold shoulder and her kid is peeking out the window as if she's gone mad.

Then to make it even weirder, afterwards Janet is chain smoking (something we don't ever see again) and she looks absolutely terrified and in shock. WHY???? Then Neil arrives and I can't explain why he walks in for 3 seconds only to leave his wife? Did he actually forget something at work or was he looking for an excuse to get away from her because he noticed she was in such a bad mood?

They never explain what the heck Janet witnessed or discovered and I can't find it anywhere online. C'mon TMDB, any ideas?

I don't think Janet witnessed anything other than Pat is completely broken by her husband's death and being left to raise their kid(s? can't remember) alone. She is subsequently distraught with it hitting home that the same fate could befall her.

I'm not sure Neil walking out has anything to do with her demeanor though - didn't this happen right after he came back from almost dying ejecting from that malfunctioning test lunar-lander? I think he was just freaking out and had to get out as he had his kids about, happy to see him, etc and he realises that he could easily be dead right then.

I understand that her life collapsed after her husband's death, but why did the filmmakers decide to show us this a whole year later? The scene lacked context and it could've been prevented had they placed the scene directly after. (I honestly thought Pat had snapped and killed one of her kids or something.) But Janet's subsequent reaction is too over the top if that's all it was.

Btw, is it even realistic that the family would still be around in the same neighborhood since there's no reason for them to live there anymore. NASA would place another family there instead, no?

Yeah, the moment where Neil walks in/out of his house did happen after that ejection scene, but the reason I'm mentioning it was because it takes place right after the Pat/Janet scene. He literally walks in as she's smoking. But I guess you're right... Maybe Neil didn't want to think about his own mortality and the effect his possible death would have had on the kids. He was in a pretty bad state.

I think the idea is that even a year later the consequences of his endeavour and the accident were felt...

Check out episodes 1 & 2 and (especially )11 of the From The Earth To The Moon to give you more of an insight into Pat White
