Anyone else feel misled by the marketing for this? I went into it thinking I'd be watching a fast paced spy thriller set against the backdrop of war, but the spy element is just a mechanism to spin a romantic drama. I was very disappointed given the cast and high expectations.

Yeah, when they got to England it went full on romance, and my interest waned, the gorgeous Marion Cotillard kept me watching though.

I can't forgive her for that death scene in The Dark Knight Rises tbh...never liked her since then. It's like I've seen beneath the beautiful veil and she's not actually an impressive actress.

I agree 100%. I remember seeing one trailer on tv numerous times and what stuck out in my mind was the scene in Casablanca when they were shooting the room up with the automatic weapons. I too assumed it would be a fast paced spy thriller with plenty of action and some elements of romance, rather than a full blown romantic drama I'm not complaining and really liked the movie, but I can see why some people may have been left disappointed.

It still plays like a thriller/mystery in the second half due to the issues surround Cotillard's character. It was pretty much what I expected.

I think this movie's failing had to do with Brad Pitt not being as popular as he used to be because he is well overexposed just like his ex wife.

yeah i also thought it would be "faster" and with less drama.

Aww that's too bad because I thought Marion did a great job at playing a spy in TDKR.

Badly marketed but also a humdrum story.

i really liked it, and it was what i expected - a human drama focussed on relationships. i didn't think it was humdrum, just old fashioned storytelling.

I don't think the marketing was bad for it. I kinda expected a romantic spy thriller going in. I just don't think Zemeckis is very good at handling romance. He's never done it before and it shows.
I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. Review of the film right here- https://youtu.be/2qBz_ImTbE0

To me it seemed like the thriller aspects were more developed than the romance... I agree with @CraigJamesReview Zemeckis didn't deliver on the romance...
It seemed like he did the action well, did average on the thriller aspects and was a bit below average on the romance relying too much on the star appeal of the leads...
Also, I don't think the excessively digital look of the film helped...

This was actually a very poor film in terms of plot and acting- without Marion Cotillard it would have been a complete dud. I wouldn't say bad marketing- the trailers actually make it look like it had substance. Brad Pitt was playing Brad Pitt as usual.

it was pretty much what I was expecting. Classic style story and very well made. My biggest issue with it was brad pitt. He didn't have much chemistry and the stiff emotionless responses didn't seem to work. she did great though.
