A meteor carrying an unknown infection, lands outside a Small Californian community, bringing terror and death. Just after midnight, a local rancher named Larry Jenkins discovers the meteor and calls the police. Inspector Bardo is sent to the scene to investigate. The small Lawton police department is short-handed, as it is the night of the high school prom. Arriving at a desolate forest road miles out of town, Bardo discovers that Jenkins has been infected by the alien organism. The officer is savagely attacked and infected. Both men head towards Lawton, terrorizing and contaminating everyone they encounter. Meanwhile, Cheryl and Timmy have left the prom and are parked atop Lover's Lane. Bardo comes upon the lovebirds and attacks them, infecting Timmy. Now Cheryl must run for her life through the pitch-black forest, escaping her pursuers and trying to reach the authorities before the infection spreads to L.A.

En la noche del baile de graduación en el pequeño pueblo californiano de Lawton, una lluvia de meteoritos altera la paz general. El agente de policía Brick Bardo es enviado a inspeccionar la zona de la colisión de los cuerpos estelares, alertado por Jenkins, un aldeano que ha presenciado el suceso. Al llegar al lugar, el oficial rápidamente detecta que algo no está bien, Jenkins deambula torpemente, sin sentido, andando como impulsado por descargas eléctricas y soltando gruñidos y balbuceos. El oficial rápidamente sufre una metamorfosis que le convierte, a su vez, en otra criatura detestable dominada por la rabia. Desde ese momento el horror se va diseminando en cascada por todo el pueblo y sólo algunos sobreviven a los salvajes ataques. Pero éstos cada vez son menos y cada vez están más rodeados.

Bilinmeyen bir enfeksiyon taşıyan meteor Kaliforniya’nın küçük bir kasabasına terör ve ölüm getirir. Gece yarısından sonra Larry adındaki yerli çiftçi meteoru keşfeder ve polisi arar. Bu durumu takip etmek üzere dedektif Bardo görevlendirilir. Lisenin mezuniyet balosu gecesinde Lawton polis departmanında yeterli sayıda polis yoktur. Bardo, şehirden kilometrelerce uzak ıssız yolda giderken Jenkins’in bir yaratık tarafından saldırıldığını ve hastalık kaptığını keşveder. İki adam Lawton’a giderken, hastalığı, karşılarına tüm çıkanlara bulaştırarak ve onları korkutarak yollarına devam ederler. Bu sırada Cherly ve Timmy mezuniyet balosundan çıkmış arabalarında oturmaktadır. Bardo yanlarına gidip onlara saldırır ve Timmy’e de hastalığı bulaştırır... Cheryl şimdi koşup hayatını kurtarmalı ve hastalık tüm Los Angeles’a yayılmadan bunu haber vermek için gerekli yerlere ulaşması gerekmektedir.
