Discuss Casino Royale

David Arnold scored every Bond movie from Tomorrow Never Dies to Quantum Of Solace. I thought that his scores were awesome and that of all of the Bond movie music, he came the closest to the late, great John Barry.

Any other opinions?

YES!

I think Arnold did a better job at scoring action scenes and the tension beforehand, compared to every other JB composer. And yes, that is including the one and only, John Barry.

OTOH Barry did better work with the melodies of the Bond girls and also just the general music we hear during the location shots.

The best overall soundtrack is "The Living Daylights" but "Casino Royale (2006)" has the best individual tracks. So both composers are fantastic. #ArnoldForBond25 grinning

@Russ007 grin Great minds think alike! When my niece was 7 years old, I used to play TLD soundtrack a lot. Eventually she would request it, but she called it the "jump over rocks record" (she did that because she saw a picture of Timothy Dalton jumping over rocks on the back of the CD case).

Casino Royale is a great soundtrack, and I really loved Chris Cornell's (may he rest in peace) performance of "You Know My Name".

Yeah, Arnold really ticked every box for Casino Royale. The theme song has always been in my top 3 and it fits the film like a glove haha.

Anyway, speaking of the JB composers, how would you rank them?

Me-

  1. Barry
  2. Arnold
  3. Martin (LALD) or Norman with JB theme / Dr. No
  4. Hamlisch (TSWLM)
  5. Serra (GoldenEye)
  6. Conti (FYEO)
  7. Newman
  8. Kamen (LTK)

@Russ007 grinning my rankings:

1) John Barry

2) david Arnold

3)Eric Serra

4) Thomas Newman

5)Michael Kamen

6)Hamlish

7) George Martin

8) Bill Conti

Can't really disagree with your #1, #2 or #8. But Martin at #7?? LALD's score is sooo smooth and timeless. Love his twist on the JB theme used in the film.

@Russ007 relaxed While to be honest that I don't remember much of George Martin's score, I think the best thing about LALD is Paul McCartney's awesome theme song. He should have gotten the Oscar for it.

If you get the chance, you should rewatch LALD asap. thumbsup_tone3

@Russ007 wink Okay, I'll try to on Tuesday, the Fourth of July. I started a History Class that is packing one semester into three weeks and I'm already behind. But may I ask why?

So you can refresh your memory on Martin's (wonderful) score.

Worst case scenario: you still get to watch LALD! Great Bond film.

@Russ007 wink Good morning! I'm going to watch LALD tomorrow. To be honest, I hated it, but the score was great. Maybe re-watching after all these years may change my mind. I'll get back to you tomorrow. Happy Fourth of July!

I always view it as one of Moore's best films because it's a good mix of the lightheartedness of, say, MR, and with the intensity of FYEO.

Great stunts like at the croc farm (100% real!!!) and the boat chase. You gotta remember that this is way before cgi came along in the late 80s. Enjoy!

@Russ007 : I just remembered that there was a scene in LALD when Bond is driving a speedboat on land and goes right through an outdoor wedding ceremony!

@PhelpsFan First of all: how the heck is your id not @ Maria Kelly?! (just discovered that lol)

Secondly: Did you get to watch Live And Let Die this week?? Timeless classic, or average movie in your view?

@Russ007 : When I signed up for TMDb, I put in PhelpsFan for my username but for some reason my real name shows up, and sometimes PhelpsFan does.

I actually remembered ten minutes ago that I was supposed to watch LALD. I'm going to try to this weekend, but I have to say unequivocally that Rosie Carver is the worst CIA agent in movie history.

@The Plastic Independent Guardian: This is just one of these times when I'm just going to say that maybe we should just agree to disagree (or that's my feeling).
