It said that he got angry and killed his wife--but when did this happen? Did they move to the Bahamas after the whole I know what you did last summer fiasco? Or was that all before?

I think they were trying to make Ben Willis seem more like this psycho killer. The only thing that sends up red flags to me is how, OK, so he always was a killer and then raised two children on his own? In the first one and about Susan/Susie's death - Ben Willis was mentioned, but never mentioned a brother. I know some people will over look that and won't care, but whatever.
