Comedians jump from comedy to drama. Think Tom Hanks (Philadelphia), Michael Keaton (Pacific Heights), etc. But some comedians are not taken as seriously as these two aforementioned, even if they are equally capable. Think Eddie Murphy (Life).
And Jim Carrey.
The Number 23 is not Ace Ventura, it's not The Mask. It's serious, and the story is intriguing. If a "serious" actor (Daniel Day Lewis?) had the lead in this movie, it'd no doubt have been seen differently, and the reviews would no doubt have been better.
Don't get me wrong. This isn't the greatest movie of all time. And, in fact, the current 64% rating here on TMDb is a pretty solid - and fair - rating.
It's just that, when people list their favourite Jim Carrey movies, this always makes my list, but almost never makes anyone else's, and I think that's a shame.
