Women's Perspective from Ray

I love the way the director is able to portray Charulata's loneliness in the beginning scene. He treats her story tenderly throughout and it's another in a line of his films that portray a women's point of view. See The Big City and the Three Daughters Trilogy for other examples of this. And all his films are gorgeously photographed.

I haven't seen any of his work prior to this (or indeed any Indian films), and this was shot beautifully. Excellent portrait of a woman of leisure trapped in an, albeit well meaning, arranged marriage to a seemingly far older man. The style and character study were superb, but the sub-plot and general narrative less so. Still, well worth watching and a million miles away from the garish, gurning stereotype of Indian film.
