Was it a wise choice? While three was a low point. I think two was a nice entry and ignoring those sequels never answers when she got the operation, what she was up for two decades and much needed character development.

Is this one even any good?

It depends on what you like. The biggest flaw for me was Alan. But I liked it.

I figured the sequels would be ignored since the original director had nothing to do with them, but yeah, I'd hoped there would be more to what happened after part one.
Admittedly I enjoyed "Return" to a degree when I first saw it years ago but after a rewatch, I realize it's just a bad attempt to recapture the feel of the original and it didn't help that Alan was such an unsympathetic douche. The 3rd movie was bad but often times hilarious because of it. This one just tried too hard with everything and it felt lazy, aside from a couple of pretty cool kills.
