Discuss Solo: A Star Wars Story

Not that that's saying much.

"Solo enters the overcrowded summer landscape at a time when Star Wars movies have been retreating ever further from their roots, boldly chasing the status quo with aspirations of socio-political currency. By comparison, this spin-off feels both traditional and ironically radical, a compelling argument for a return to a purer, more imaginative brand of cinema. For the first time in three years (and probably for a while afterwards), we have a Star Wars film that genuinely emanates pride in being a Star Wars film, that embraces the series with all its blemishes, and that doesn’t arrogantly aim to erase the prequels from history..."

Here's a long article vouching for Solo as the purest Star Wars film since Revenge of the Sith.

Despite its first act flaws I still prefer Rogue One, that climax was so good I can forgive the rest of it.

Solo is certainly better than TLJ, but it's so dark/grey and dreary. It also doesn't really do Han right and the Kessel Run is shoehorned in and makes no sense. How is anyone supposed to know the Falcon made the run in 12 parsecs when no one was around to see it who wasn't on the ship? He could have just made it up. I got the sense the Kessel Run was a big race like the Formula 1 Grand Prix or something.

Also seeing him training as a pilot in the Imperial Navy would have been cool. Also meeting Lando a lot sooner and having it be more of a buddy comedy would have been even better. Not a terrible movie, certainly passable, but there are a dozen different ways they could have done it better. And instead of stealing fuel and tying it into the rebellion they simply should have been steal money for themselves in a true space heist movie.

I agree with everything you said apart from the buddy comedy thing...

Frankly i didn't think Rouge One was that good. The characters bored me to death. The only person that stood out to me was Donnie Yang. Overall i enjoyed Alden Ehrenreich bad imitation of Harrison Ford than boring ass Felicity Jones's Jyn Erso. Frankly i don't think Rouge One needed to exist as a film. We already know what was going happen. I find it a little unbelievable that Empire wouldn't know the plans were stolen. When the battle to get the plans is as big as the battle to destroy the death star itself. My biggest problem with Solo was L3-37. Im not going say Solo is a prefect movie and yeah it plays it by the numbers.. But i think its the closest thing to fun Space Adventure since Return of the Jedi. And last thing i would call Rouge One is fun. More like Zack Snyder "let me slit my wrists" depressing.

To each his own but I thought K2-SO was fantastic and actually felt bad when he sacrificed himself. Chewie in Solo was probably the best character and he doesn't even speak english.

I totally agree Jyn was not a well written character even though there were plenty of ways they could have made her great, but like I said, as an entire movie, I'd much rather watch Rogue One because of the climax and the hallway scene alone. Also the shot of the Death Star firing on Jedha and seeing the debris shoot up into the atmosphere like a volcano is one of the single most epic shots in a Star Wars movie.
