It has always been this way... Out of the hundreds of millions of Star Wars fans, a small minority are girls...

It was always a series meant for 12 year old boys... Laser swards, space jets, older cool friend and pet dog... And a bikini-clad princess girlfriend... All very pre-adolescent boy oriented...

Nothing really for girls and even less for women...

It's like asking why there are so few men who are into Mean Girls... but unlike Mean Girls, Star Wars fans have held onto their attachment to this series well into and past middle age... There is really no equivalent that I can think of... Perhaps Marvel series will acheive this over the next decade or two. In a way it already has considering fans of the comics who are older fans of the movies.

A movie about Hanz Solo was always going to be a big ask for anyone who isn't a faithfull Star Wars fan... Even more so women as there is no sex appeal in Star Wars either...

Edit: Thinking about it more broadly, the only equivalent for girls and women that I can think of is the facination with the British Royal family... Diana, her kids, their marraiges, etc... That is a childhood attachment that many girls take into adulthood... I know it's a stretch, but women don't tend to have movie fandoms in the way some men have with Star Wars and Superheroes... Although the Superhero thing does seem to have crossed the sex divide and has more universal apeal to women as well...

Maybe they're put off by the way boys took ownership of it, and they way some boys sour any chance of enjoyment by the way they express their post-entitlement distress regarding it.

These "boys" you're referring to are mostly middle aged men but everything else you posted is depressingly correct.

I know a lot of girls who love Star Wars. Maybe you haven't met the right one yet. If she says she doesn't like Star Wars, say "E-choo-ta!", and just move on.

As a 'girl' I considered it a movie for children. It had nothing to do with me being a 'girl' or it being a movie for boys.
