I've been trying to wrap my head around why Kathleen Kennedy and by association Lucasfilm would willingly and so openly talk down to fans and intentionally (by their own admission) make a product that was going to turn off fans. I mean if you want someone's money you don't treat them like lepers. The first 6 films came out during a time where there was nothing else that could compare to Star Wars.
But now we have the MCU, which is not perfect by any means, but it's an epic ongoing story with well rounded characters and when they make a mistake like with Thor 2 or Iron Man 3 they actually make an effort to let their fans know their concerns are heard and that they are willing to make changes in order to please the people giving them billions of dollars in movie tickets and merchandise.
So as much as it pains me to see Star Wars crash and burn like this, as Emo Ren said, let the past die. Kill it if you have to. Well Lucasfilm is making good on that philosophy so I am going to speak with my wallet and skip Solo and buy a ticket to Ant-Man and the Wasp.

I think Star Wars should have ended after Return of the Jedi.

Well we certainly wouldn't have missed out on much.
I don't know. The problem with Star Wars has always been commercialization. The first one was a surprise hit that spawned a merchandising empire, the second one was all dark and broody and people didn't like it at the time but grew to love (NOT expecting this to happen with TLJ), and then third one was way more family friendly with teddy bears.
Then came the special editions. Then came the prequels, all of which had serious writing and tonal problems, and then the Disney movies followed suit. The older fans want a serious space drama but the studio wants a cereal box they can sell to China and they want so much to be like the MCU but don't understand WHY the MCU is so big right now just like the DCEU doesn't understand, and now both franchises are failing because they don't know how to properly copy off of Marvel.
Like I said, I really don't think we need Star Wars anymore. Guardians of the Galaxy is doing Star Wars better than Star Wars right now, and Thor Ragnarok is like 100x better than TFA and TLJ put together.

I think Star Wars came up with the idea to merchandise the hell out of everything. I mean im sure that Planet of the Apes had plenty of merchandise. But not to the same degree Star Wars took things.

I agree. After TLJ, I'm done with this franchise.
