SPOILER
From an online review:
You are here probably wondering if Han Solo got emasculated and ruined as a character even more. The answer is yes. His name now has a origin that is lamer than anything you could imagine. He is alone when he signs up for the Empire, says his name is Han so the Empire names him Han Solo.
I remember reading about this during the film's production. I thought "no way, that can't be true!" And it is? Sigh. Why did they need to do that? His name was perfect as it was. It didn't need to be different. That's an awful idea and Disney/Lucasfilm should have respected Lucas' original version of the character. Change for change's sake is the worst form of creativity!
Let's hope Disney don't do a Luke origin spin-off. The writers will tell us how Luke got his surname:
"Luke's grandfather had the force ability to levitate so he was called Skywalker."
Glad we all know that. My life is complete knowing that bit of trivia!

I thought that was unnecessary also, honestly I thought his name was already Han Solo until that scene happened.

They seemed to take so many creative freedoms with this movie they might as well given him a new, but oddly familiar name like: Han Alone or Han Individual. Well....they do kind of sound like female names when you read them out fast like Hanna Lone and Honey Dividual.....but they seemed to make him such an emasculated nerd anyways that at this point I'm not sure anyone would object to those names as they would fit him quite nicely.

Well "Solo" was better than his birth name, "Jobb."
Other given names before the Empire/Random Jedi/Drunken Accident resulted in a name change:

Meh. An unnecessary addition to Han's history, but didn't really stand out as anything too egregious.

A fine idea. Just like young Vito in the Godfather Part II gets the name that will become infamous and synonymous with crime almost by chance, due to immigration bureaucracy. It's a nice idea to steal for Han Solo's character.
What is it with Star Wars geeks that when they get told something they didn't know, they go on the defensive and make stupid claims about "not needing to know"? As if it undermines or redefines their fandom.
