Discuss Seven Samurai

This is a thread from IMDB. I wanted to see how it would look by copying the pages source code and pasting it here. I had to tweak it a little to remove unneeded link and such. Overall I think it looks pretty good.

My biggest complaint is that the movie should've been longer.

I see what you mean about 'Transformers' but 'The Dark Knight' is hardly generic. It transcended its genre in a way that few would have ever expected from a movie based on a comic book character. As for Seven Samurai there were some elements I wanted more of and perhaps some characterisation for the bandits. I did find it a little boring the first time I saw it, but I think people watch it expecting the great action scenes and get bored in the waiting. Once you see it a second time you appreciate the visuals and get more involved in the first 2/3 of the film.

You are not the first to state that, however, when they did that in THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN with Calvera, it actually gave him a sympathetic outlook and thus, he became less menacing. The story is really about the relationships between the samurai and the farmer, with the bandits, nameless and all, serving as that unknown danger - a monster or a dragon lurking in the woods waiting for the right time to strike.

I went the opposite way. I ripped it into my pc and edited it down to under two hours. I cut out the overplay in the script, over-abundance of dramatics and people wailing.

Well, saintanger, you could have saved yourself the trouble, there already is a cut version, butchered just as you describe, and created specifically for the Western market, for people with short attention spans. It's horrible.

Wouldn't you be better off just watching Lone Wolf and Cub or Hanzo the Razor? Lots of slashing and not too much troublesome exposition. They're quite fun.

You know, I miss being able to have intellectual conversations like this. Though I do love this site very much, sometimes I feel quite sad that it's sort of a 50/50 split as to whether anyone will bother to reply at all, let alone with anything constructive. That said, I echo the sentiment of this thread. Every year on Kurosawa's birthday I put Shichinin no samurai on, eat sushi, and drink nihonshu in order to celebrate the brilliance of the film. Truly a classic that absolutely set the standard for the epic films that followed.
