According to Ford, it's suppose to be about liberation. These women are free from social constructs and expectations. What we see as ugly and explicit is to them a symbol of freedom of joy. This is contrasted with Susan who deals in this sort of artistic work but is forever trapped within her own social expectations of her life. The irony is that she gave up that sort of liberty to be in this world where she is constantly miserable and depressed where she can only observe that sort of freedom in the art she collects.

I stopped watching after the daughter flipped off the hillbillies. It was clear at that point that both the mother and the daughter will be raped and murdered. I don't have the stomach for that kind of stuff.

yeah that struck me as unnecessarily hostile on the daughter's part. not that it justified rape and murder.
i disagree. anyone who visits a discussion forum for a film they have not seen should expect to get spoiled imo (the exception being if the film has not been released yet).

OT, but had to say: clever use of font color and HTML! Well done!
I think it was meant to illicite that reaction... Also, it was meant to show how meaningless Susan's work had become to her... She even called it trash...
It's meant to be repulsive and empty, but in a way that could also pass as the kind of conceptual, de-skilled, contemporary art that is well received in the art community... 😎
I thought it was a great shot, but have to admit that I stopped eating my snacks! 😂
I do like Vingo's post above about how it represents liberation and freedom to be true to one's self in a way that Susan had denied herself... The discussion about her brother who came out of the closet was another point where this idea of being true to one's self came up in the movie... But Susan was more idealistic about it at that time as she was younger and had not yet had to make the choice between her social status and lifestyle and what her heart wanted...

It's the artistic creations of Susan, and it's ugly, that's why she is disgusted by what she is doing.

Most awkward opening to a film ever? Pretentious film-making?
