Is it something that only affects millennials due to their upbringing or is it a natural consequence of adopting most modern technology and social media? While many make a conscious choice to go off the grid, I think it's become harder as time goes on. For those who remained blissfully ignorant up until now, it's even more challenging having to adapt to new technology while also having to learn about the risks to their personal privacy. Most people who use free internet services never realizes that free usually comes with a price, especially for late adopters who prioritize ease and convenience.

People don't realise that when they use most social media technology... They become the product!

But yeah, millennials are partially susceptible to oversharing because of their upbringings compared to Gen X people as sharing too much of your life is looked down upon by most of the latter... However, if you compare millennials to even younger people, in their late teens now, you really see that oversharing is even more of an issue with younger people, to the extent that there is no distinction between your actual life and that which is intermediated by technology...

You are your online self... Scary...

P.S. I haven't seen the film... is it any good?

Why are you posting your opinion on a forum on the internet?

Sometimes people want to invite discussion. Inviting discussion is constructive when there are people who would challenge your point of view. If you invite discussion and then expect everyone to circle jerk your point of view and allow your confirmation bias to disregard any opposing points of view then that discussion isn't constructive. Infact, that type of discussion might cause you to become further closed minded and make you retreat even further into your bubble.

If you never express your opinion and never open it up for discussion, and as a result your opinions are never challenged, it can also be bad.

P.S. Haven't seen the movie either. I will watch it at some point.

Why Do we Overshare?

Three reasons come to mind:

1) We're social creatures. We need to share and interact with others to feel alive. We can barely live without social interactions.

2) Internet interactions are way easier than real-life ones: connecting and sharing on social networks is easy, with way less risk and needs almost zero effort. It's also superficial and, in the end, way less nourishing, but we tend to instinctively choose the easiest way.

3) Although we all need interactions, sharing, approval and stimulation (things social networks give profusely), younger people might need even more of it, because they are more insecure, more open and more approval-seeking. Couple that with their higher ability with technology, and that could explain their stronger attachment with that behavior.
