Discuss Colossal

I got a 16 year old & 12 year old that LOVE kaiju movies (Old Godzilla and Pacfic Rim being out favs). More then 1 review I read said "don't bring the kids" and that Anne's character gets pretty "beat up"....I'd hate to see Anne beaten to a pulp by a man or raped...hopefully that isn't the case is it? Spoilers in this dept please. One theater is showing it in my area through next Wed & I'd LIKE to take the kids. Since they've seen the trailer they've been wanting to see it.

It's not overly violent but there is some physical abuse directed toward Hathaway toward then end. However, it isn't, and I can't make this clear enough, a kaiju movie, it just happens to have a giant monster in it. It's about alcoholism, abuse and other much darker subjects that the trailer does not reveal. Seriously, if you're expecting a fun monster movie, don't watch it, if you want a movie about how alcohol and bad choices can destroy lives then this is the movie for you.

Is it Rachel Getting Married II?

Meres, ended up watching it Saturday night...I kinda knew it was more of a "human drama" then a fun Kaiju movie and hinted that to my kids. Surprisingly my DAUGHTER really loved it!

I don't see the kaiju movie aspect as a central theme, it is more like a vehicle for expression of human conflict. The characters make plenty of bad choices followed by bad consequences, but there is also regret and good intentions in the mix, plus ingenious moves and a final confrontation with a surprising ending in which ingenuity wins over brute force.

Yeah. I saw it as an analogy. The monster that is in all of us. But as the film went on the "monster" became something else entirely.

Well, I guess I'm fucking retarded then, I just saw it as a very interesting kaiju comedy / drama. and I didn't get that the movie was actually about alcoholism.
