the alleged rape controversy? the absence of a white savour to make potential white viewers feel better? the downbeat ending? the absence of strong female characters? an imbalance of screen time for nate parker to the detriment of the other actors? all of the above?
imo this is a film worth watching, but it is missing something, i can't put my finger on what, but my thoughts keep going to my sense that the other actors were underused.

Because no Oscar nomination. It generated some buzz in Sundance but didn't get nominated. So it gently faded away as it should've done. It's not a good enough film for Oscars.
In my opinion this is an embarrassing film that while trying to put the 1915's version in it's place, it creates similar manipulation to get it's own message across, which is pretty muddled with that ending.

I didn't like the movie because it was an ugly reminder of the the man that caused white people's fear of intelligent black people.
