Discuss Tomb Raider: Lara Croft

i've only just played the 2013 game in preparation for seeing the film. i find it didn't hold up to the Crystal Dynamics version of Lara Croft that it supplanted, but was a fine game, if a little too shooty when it should've been puzzly. it had a few narrative issues which seem pretty insignificant having seen the film.

why, oh why, did they feel the need to spend the entire first act on the streets of England? it adds almost nothing to the story and, in fact, worsens it by weakening the concept that fighting alone for survival on the island has hardened Lara, helping her to grow into the world class adventurer. if you're going to have her show up at the island and start Ramboing around immediately, why even make this the origin story?

characters who benefited the plot were removed and replaced by people with little to no reason to exist.

there was a span of maybe twenty or thirty minutes in the middle of the film that worked really well. most of this was lifted pretty directly from the game.

it does handily trump the Jolie vehicles, if that's any sort of accomplishment.

The 2013 game was a gunfest, with some "optional" and limited tomb raiding. The 2015 game is far better with varied locales to platform in and actual tombs with riddles. The movie is very poor. Already didn't like Vikander in Ex machina (as a fervent SF reader and watcher, the movie is just dull, what happens is no surprise, and if a message about quality of life in human or robot is there, it was badly done). So we have this girl that refuses her inheritance as she thinks her dad is still alive. She does a bike chase in London. Hmmm, maybe I got in for the wrong movie? She then finds clues about an ancient evil Japanese Goddess that her father was interested in. OK getting back to the theme. So there's this guy that wants to open the tomb and uses slaves, there's gunfight, more gunfight, and less than 10 minutes exploring the tomb. Would seem that the license is dead again, but actually many people went to see it in cinemas and some still going ... Only thing I'm sure is I'm sad this movie was done.

edit : watched the movie "Tomb invader" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7781732/reference), small budget but entertaining, Gina Vitori is nice as the lead, actually it's around 1/2 of the movie tomb raiding

I watched about 15 minutes and turned it off. The bicycle race was especially cringe worthy. Perhaps I will finish it someday but I didn't feel like wasting my time watching anymore today, haha.
