The plot is being watered down too much just to fit the 1 hr 56 min duration. The writers didn’t to put a lot of effort in writing a good script as if they just want to finish script & get their paycheck. I wish Peter Jackson was the director/writer for this movie. He can do it the same way he did King Kong 2005 since KK had similar plot. Besides that, I find the father-daughter drama unnecessary. The story should have just focus on Lara saving her friends, her expedition crew members on Yamatai just like in the 2013 game. The movie also should be R rated.

Compare with the 2001 TR, despite the bad reviews at least the 2001 TR knows what it was & delivered it perfectly. It has all the core elements of a TR as it shows LC raiding tombs, solving puzzles, searching for ancient artifact in Cambodia & Siberia. The TR 2018 didn’t have most of that core elements which makes it look dull, empty & boring. Regarding the puzzle solving elements, also was poorly written, poorly done. The movie didn't involve the audiences in Lara's mind, her thinking. It didn't even show us why she turn the knobs at the tomb.

They remove the supernatural elements from the 2013 game which they shouldn't have. The supernatural/mystic elements like those undead Stormguard(Samurai warriors) makes the games storyline interesting. In the movie, they replace those elements with typical isolated zombie virus plot line which we have seen in many other movies these days.

One thing from the game that should be ignored is when Lara got her first kill. It doesn’t make any sense at all that she felt vulnerable & remorse when she kill the mercenary & few minutes later, she kill a dozen more mercenaries without remorse. She is in a life threatening situation. She shouldn’t have felt remorse after her first kill because she kill to survive. That life threatening situation drives her to do so.

Regarding Alicia, she is mediocre as LC. In fact, she isn’t convincing enough as LC due to the poorly written plot & how poorly her character is written & that didn’t allow us to see Alicia’s full potential as LC. Despite playing a different version of LC, Angelina Jolie had a persona & star power (she is at her prime when 2001 TR came out) that fits LC like a glove. Alicia here is just a talented actress that somewhat look the part. Alicia is no Jolie. You need someone like Jolie to play LC perfectly.

Tbh, Camilla Luddington is more convincing as LC in the game than Alicia. I feel more connected to Camilla’s LC. She brings life to the character. She makes the character real, more human especially in Rise of TR. Camilla did a perfect job than that Oscar winning actress. This is why many people want Camilla in the movie. Unfortunately, the movie had failed in the early writing stage. So, my rating is 2/5. The only way for the movie to work is to hire good, serious director & good, talented writers who are passionate & familiar about the source material, knowing what is it about, what is the core elements of the game that should be in the movie, etc.. . Roar Uthaug, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Evan Daugherty & Alastair Siddons, you aren't not the right people for this movie.

As a summary, this is what TR movie actually needs:

1. Do not remove the supernatural element from the game.
2. Do not change the story in the game unless the writers can do better.
3. Put more & better combat/action scenes, tomb raiding & puzzle solving scenes that can show Lara’s capabilities.
4. Longer duration like 2 hr 30 min.
