A damn shame, they definitely could've done something with the character and the Symbiote (which in the comic spins many characters).

Grace Randolph likes it, she says it has a Sam Raimi Evil Dead/Darkman vibe.
That's good enough for me!

Me too. The thing is, with so many bad reviews, my expectations going in will be low. So ironically, I may end up liking the movie more than I had expected.

I always feel the need to preface my comments with, "Not a comic book fan," but I think it was a mistake that they didn't make it an R-Rated movie akin to Logan or Deadpool. Those films opened the door for very edgy comic book films and just the image of Venom suggests extreme violence. Also, from what I understand, Spider-Man has no presence in the movie. As a result, critics have said there's a weird attempt to make Eddie Brock/Venom somewhat heroic to make up for a lack of a balancing hero like Spidey.
I thought Venom was entirely evil--except when it teamed with Spidey to fight Carnage--isn't it? And Hardy is a brutish person; his acting and physique don't suggest a nice guy, but rather a hard-headed bruiser. Those are the roles he's gravitated towards his entire career. Why cast him if you're not going to really work that angle? He's a great actor and you could have used that expectation to make the movie extremely brutal. (And no, I don't believe his corporate-speak that he made a movie his 10-year-old would be permitted to see.)
I'm guessing comic fans will forgive the faults the critics are hitting as long as the action is good. I just think that the studio blinked when they could have made a hard-R movie that the Deadpool and Logan fans would have wildly embraced.

worst think I've read is the villain is not good, like not scary, not charismatic and (I guess) not well developed, that's a super flaw

If it's not in the MCU it's a waste of character and time.

MCU is trash. Avengers 1 was just a fast paced action flick with little character development, and thor ragnorak was cringy as fawk.
Anyways, i think there should have been a Rated R horror Carnage movie instead. Venom does deserve a premise though, but the possibilities with Carnage are greater.

Avengers and any other MCU is miles better than the trash Sony have put out over the years. This is no exception.

While I think you're going a wee bit overboard. I must commend you for not jumping on the hype train of the first Avengers film.

Sam Raimi's Spiderman 1 and 2 are way better than the vast majority of MCU films. Most MCU films are fun but forgettable.
There wouldn't even be an MCU if Raimi hadn't demonstrated how to adapt a comic book film.

They didn't make it rated R so they could show a clip of Into the Spider Verse after the credits, which is a PG movie.
They want a wide audience to be able to watch all their movies.

The MCU is an enormous achievement in blockbuster film making. The individual movies might not be on the level of say The Dark Knight or Logan ( a hell of a lot better than any Sony including the Raimi crap) but as a whole series of movies it is the most coherent and well made comic book franchise. Any movie on a Marvel property that is not part of this universe feels like a waste to me. The only way I can accept a non MCU Marvel is if it is rated R. Otherwise I just don't see the point.
