Discuss Manchester by the Sea

Issue one: This was a mind fuck for me. The estate lawyer tells Casey, there's a fund with the intention for you to move to BOSTON? and Casey says I can't commute from there everyday to get his son. I thought the family and Casey were from Manchester by the Sea and that is where the accident happened and the the location of the kid's high school. I thought he was a handyman in Boston and that's where he lived when his brother died.

When Affleck goes to his nephews school after his brother died, the coach realizes who he is and on of the kids tells him all of those stories are bs. So what are the stories? He had some issue with what everyone thought of him locally, which is probably why he moved to Boston but did they explain it? The way he said it, it made him sound like more of a local legend hero. Did that imply there were rumors that he intentionally murdered his children?

To your first question, I think the funds were for relocation away from Boston. To your second question I agree, it is probably rumours about him deliberately setting the fire or other general criminality.

I didn't get the impression that the rumors were about him intentionally setting the fire (maybe for insurance). Rather, I thought the rumors were that he was responsible for the fire because he got drunk and careless, and was therefore to blame for what happened. Even Randi (his wife) evidently originally blamed him for causing the fire, although she later was sorry for it. But she certainly never thought he did it deliberately. It just happened after a night of drunken carousing, and shows how a few minutes of carlessness can affect your whole life.
