Discuss Manchester by the Sea

I am afraid jury will go with political agenda promoting gays and black especially now with Trump and calls in recent years they are old white men and Manchester is not politically correct enough, no gay characters, pretty much no black characters except few moments with his, also pretty bleak view of women, all ingredients to be ignored and best make lead for Affleck will be just to give him something. :(

No, it will be justice when this doesn't win. This is the most overhyped and overrated movie if the year and the worst of all 9 nominees, except for Fences if you can call that a film; it's more of a stage play. But Fences does have great acting. Washington is a lock for best actor, and it's because he was 20 times better than Affleck and deserves it.

Who is the jury?

How can they fix it?

The front runner for best picture is La La Land as it has been bagging awards to the run up to the Oscars.

Manchester by the sea was a worthy but dull film.

i would not give manchester by the sea best film either - that would go for arrival imo - that had the total package in terms of direction, acting, editing and cinematography. however, i do feel that affleck's performance had the edge over denzel washington's, as it required more range and subtlety. affleck may lose out due to the allegations of sexual harassment, but i would rather see someone else win their first oscar than another win his third.

so it officially happened, exactly what i expected, Moonlight pushing black and gay agenda won, giving it to the LLLL would be paying it safe, Manchester too controversial, never stood a chance

I had such high hopes for MBTS...i thought it was boring, redundant, and plodded along at a snails pace. Before you accuse me of being some thrill junkie that only watches Transformers movies ( I hate those movies BTW) I wanted to like this movie, i really did. I like Casey Affleck, thought he was great in Gone Baby Gone. But this movie was senseless and could serve as an Ambien if you needed a sleep aid. Yes, I understood the story and what it was trying to say. He suffered great tragedy. But the dialogue was boring, the flashbacks cut in and out so many times I lost count. Not best picture worthy IMO.............off all the nominees last night I would have given it to Hidden Figures, or Hacksaw Ridge.

a film about a black gay drug dealer is a hell of a lot more controversial than the story of a depressed white guy. the fact that this film took home the best actor award and best original screenplay is a significant endorsement of its quality. however, in a range of high quality films that were shortlisted for best film, mbts was always going to be an outside chance. it is a good film, but far from exceptional.

Of the nine nominees, Manchester was my #2 behind, interestingly enough, Moonlight.

I'm about half way through watching all 9, then I'll report back. ;)
