I think the producer got involved in trying to produce a happy ending. They destroyed what could have been a great movie. How did all those kids immediately evade the grandparents and board the bus without anybody seeing it? It was magic time and didn't ring true to a movie that had something to say about alternative parenting styles.

the hint was at the beginning. the children know how to move stealthily, and not be discovered. they are very resourceful so sneaking out of a huge house probably wasn't much of a challenge.
