Discuss Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I knew when Tarkin appeared that he had to be a digital recreation - a really good one - because I knew the actor Peter Cushing was dead. I've heard that plenty of people weren't aware of that and thought he was the real deal.

I've heard of the uncanny valley, but I think RO got Tarkin as close to realistic-looking as I've ever seen.

SPOILERS Princess Leia at the end looked a little more noticeably digital, but I saw this film the day of her death, so it was a poignant moment for me anyway.

I think Tarkin was not perfect and was overused, just to show off the technology.

Leia was great, demonstrated the advantages of the "less is more" approach - but when she uttered that one word, the spell broke, revealing the imperfection in animation. They should've shomehow worked around it, and not have her speak while her face is visible.

I couldn't agree more. I feel like they used Tarkin too much. Leia's cameo was perfect!

Tarkin wasn't totally perfect, but it was pretty damn close. Leia was off but I didn't arrive at that conclusion until my second viewing. Initially, I was too caught up in the emotion of the scene as I saw it after Carrie Fisher's death.

I saw it with people who weren't huge Star Wars fans and they didn't realize it was a digital creation instead of an actor. Not that he was perfect, but unless you were really looking for flaws, they were hard to see.

I actually had no idea they placed the actors who have passed in this movie digitally, but the instant Tarkin turned around I knew, googled it, and yeah. So the first scene where we see Tarkin's face was bad for me. However, after the initial "shock"(?) I was fine with it. And Leia was no problem at all, her face was on screen for just a few seconds.

i fell asleep during the movie

I know it's not that easy to pull off but I preferred the way they cast a new actor for Mon Mothma, rather than use CG

Of course they did have Wayne Pygram playing Tarkin from afar in Revenge of the Sith.

My thinking about the Rogue One Tarkin was: how tall was Peter Cushing? I remember his Tarkin as shorter than Vader and yet in Rogue One Tarkin is shown to be taller than Krennic and therefore Ben Mendelsohn, which doesn't seem right to me. The height difference between Krennic and Vader later on seems similar.

Aside from that hang up it did impress me when I first saw it but I think that was on a smaller screen and online. On a TV screen I think the impact is a bit less now that I've seen it a few times. Guy Henry's a great fit though and his impression is decent.

To date the youthed Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy is probably what I consider to be the most successful digital creation, but then he's playing himself, just as Jeff Bridges did in Tron Legacy, so the authentic body language is already covered.
