But when this movie first came out I couldn't stand it. The main reason was the sound. I was astonished this movie won some award for best sound. I saw it twice in the theaters and couldn't understand what any of the characters were saying either time. I went, the second time, to a different theater thinking maybe it was their sound systems that were messed up. When I still couldn't understand the actors' lines I gave up. Seeing it on DVD years later I was finally able to follow the story and it has become one of my absolute favorites since then.
Why was the sound so messed up? Seems like I read somewhere that the film used some then-new process for sound recording and a lot of the older theaters, like the ones where I saw it, just weren't able to handle it.

Hmm, weird...it was the complete opposite for me when I saw this all three times (the only film to date where I went to the big screen more than twice), the sound was pretty much flawless and one of my fondest memories of it. I guess it just depended on the theater. Still one of my favorite films as well, it's been holding up nicely.

I fell in love with this movie at the theater. Everytime I hear the theme music it brings a smile to my face.

It was a wonderful experience on the big screen. While it remains good fun, subsequent small screen viewings do not hold up so well - some of the dialogue is embarrassingly bad. But I do still have a sentimental attachment to the film and it remains enjoyable, for all its many flaws.

Want to experience it first hand? Move to Florida. Dinosaurs will be trying to kill you everywhere. Alligators everywhere and people seem to think it's cute or something. They get a hold on you and your ass is dead as they pull you into the water and drown you.

One of my all-time faves as well. I re-watch it every single year. Same with parts 2 & 3
