This popular and beloved well done, highly regarded cinema classic definitely warrants some discussion here.
What's not to love about this delightful, charming film? The casting can't be beat, the story and performances are wonderful, and you can't help but feel good when you watch it.
Ingrid Bergman was, in my opinion, never more beautiful or radiant than here. Bing Crosby is the epitome of "Fr. Cool". The kids are endearing.
This film has just the right amount of substance and schmaltz to take things high on the sweetness meter, but to not go overboard with it.

Throughout the decades I was growing up and for a while afterward, this movie is one of a select array of old films that would annually air on t.v. during the Thanksgiving to Christmas annual holiday season - in Bell's case due to it including the sweetly entertaining Christmas Pageant section. Really though, this overall isn't either a Christmas or even a "holiday" movie. Nonetheless, it honourarily became considered one.
This movie brings readily to mind the prior year's Going My Way, which also stars Bing Crosby as Fr. O'Malley, though I consider Bells to be more of a treat, and easily my fave, of the two.

I saw this today and found it a bit unusual. All the secondary plots were interesting and enjoyable.
spoilers But I had issues with them diddling an old man of poor physical health and questionable mental health out of his property. And then to go against doctors orders and tell Bergman she has TB. I mean, it made sense from the way it was played in the film, but it's a but weird for the doctor to expressly forbid that as it may endanger her recovery and for a priest to think he knows better.
And yes, I do over analyse lighter films! :p
