民国三十八年，国民政府全面撤退，李弥将军所率领的第八军仍在云南边境作困兽之斗。在草木皆兵的逃亡中，他们遇上另一支由李国辉团长领导的部队，两边人马合力逃出国境，建立据点，展开长达五年的异域生涯。但就在他们日渐壮大的同时却被迫撤军，使他们辛苦奋斗的五年时间成了毫无意义的牺牲... 《异域》是由一部禁书改编，曾经被电检处禁演。朱延平说服了黑道大哥，答应为他拍一部卖座片《大头兵》，用来交换拍摄《异域》的权利。没想到最后《异域》比《大头兵》更加卖座。朱延平认为，《异域》最重要的是使得台湾地区的电检制度前进了一大步。因为这部电影，群众举行了游行，电检处做出了让步，从修剪21刀到16刀，再到最后的一刀没剪。这部戏内地没有引进过，但是朱延平相信它的主题曲很多人都知道——罗大佑的《亚细亚的孤儿》。

國共內戰後，中國上頭的國軍幾近全軍覆沒，唯有李國輝團長的一支部隊突圍，流落異鄉，想返回家鄉卻處處碰壁，加上政治情勢的設限，宛如被孤立般的無所是從，成為『身陷於異鄉地域，卻孤立無援的軍隊』

In 1950s, Chinese Civil War ends with the defeat of Republic of China and the establishment of Communist China. The 93rd Division's soldiers take their families with them, exit southwestern China and enter northern Burma (Myanmar). The hike through forest is full of disasters and short of supplies, but the survivors reach and settle within border of Burma. They build a village, and ally with local armed gang to resist Burmese government's attacks. Later, the relocated government of Republic of China offers to take the soldiers and dependents to Taiwan, but some are disappointed with the government and decide to stay.

En la década de 1950, la Guerra Civil China termina con la derrota de la República de China y el establecimiento de la China Comunista. Los soldados de la 93.a División se llevan a sus familias con ellos, salen del suroeste de China y entran en el norte de Birmania (Myanmar). La caminata por el bosque está llena de desastres y escasez de suministros, pero los sobrevivientes llegan y se establecen dentro de la frontera de Birmania. Construyen una aldea y se alían con una banda armada local para resistir los ataques del gobierno birmano. Más tarde, el gobierno reubicado de la República de China ofrece llevar a los soldados y dependientes a Taiwán, pero algunos están decepcionados con el gobierno y deciden quedarse.
