Discuss Beauty and the Beast

All in all I really liked this movie and I can't wait to see it again now that I know what to expect. Love it or hate it, it is a truly beautiful movie looks wise. As much as I loved it, there is the odd thing I would've changed...

-I wish they had taken out the Days in the Sun number and used that extra 3 minutes to expand on the West Wing and Wolf chase scene. It felt so rushed and the Beast wasn't nearly scary enough in that scene. That's my biggest pet peeve about the movie. I feel like the movie had enough music in it that they didn't really need that number, even though it is a pretty song it just didn't seem necessary and the time could've been better used to add another 10 seconds or so to some of the other scenes where it felt kinda choppy.

  • The magical atlas. Now I didn't dislike this scene necessarily and I like that they explained what happened to Belle's mother, but I would've liked it better if Maurice was the one who told her about her mother..like I would've preferred it if Maurice and Belle had a heart to heart in the back of the wagon before Belle took off to the castle. It would've been a sweet scene between the 2.

-I wish they had given the Beast more of an opportunity to say how he felt about Belle before the Evermore number. As beautiful of a song that it was it kinda felt out of place in this movie. I didn't like that when Lumiere asked if he cared about Belle before the dance, he didn't really say anything. I like the interpretation of the Beast in this version..it was different, but not in a bad way, but he seemed too guarded with his feelings so when he lets her go and then just starts singing this beautiful epic love song, it seemed kinda out of character. At that point he didn't even seem %100 sure he loved her yet.

-I wish they had spent a little more time and money on the Beast. The movie was so beautiful and the staff looked great...especially Cogsworth, but the Beast did look a bit off in some scenes. It's not a big issue for me and it didn't bother me that much, but it would've put this movie in another league if the Beast had looked as good as everything else did. I thought the facial expressions were fine, it was more the whole body shots that looked kinda weak.

If those few things were different this movie would've been a solid 10/10! Right now though I'd put it at a 8.5 or even 9/10. I might feel different watching it again, now that I know what to expect going in..Either way I'm definitely buying this the day it comes out on Blu-ray!

I agree. The beast wasn't scary enough. He looked like a goat - something loveable and cuddly. They should have given him more of a lion's face. I also felt that Belle's actress should have been a better singer. Gaston should have been more manly and had a deeper singing voice.

I would have cut out the scenes that added nothing to story. Such as that search party scene.

Lol I have actually watched it again....guess that says something. And shh I liked it more the second time. So you should see it again ;)

I wish they remove that "Evermore" song completely. It did seem very incongruous with this Beast's personality. It seemed WAY too "Broadway" and cheesy...the lyrics...his running around and posturing....none of that seemed consistent with anything he'd done before, or even after that scene. Totally should have been cut. Better just to it go straight to him moping and depressed like in the cartoon after she leaves.

I wasn't a fan of the atlas either. Seemed too much like an obvious plot device. I mean...would he really have never used that? I get that he's a Beast but he could have gone to some cool deserted tropical island to hang out from time to time, rite? And yeah, good point. Would have been much more poignant for Maurice to tell her himself.

I know I've said this 100x but I wish they had made Cogsworth more like he was in the original. Although I found his clock-self in this version to be aesthetically very cute, he was a pretty unlikable character I thought. The original Cogsworth was high strung and all too but was more endearing and was also clever. And I totally could have done without the him having his wife?girlfriend? find him at the end. She was such a jerk the whole movie. And_ that's_ his wife? Okaaay.

I would have liked more LeFou lol b/c I liked him in this.

Maybe turn down Be Our Guest a notch, less closeups and colors and cluttered screen. And cut out the creepy Ms Potts winking and blowing a kiss to the camera. That was awkward.

And yeah, Beast CGI could have been improved. But I didn't hate it as much as I did seeing the trailers.

Although I like Audra McDonald, I also found Garderobe or whatever to be a bit odd/over the top. And why did she have narcolepsy lol?

That's all I got atm

Six of us just got back from seeing it. One 16, two 30s, one 40s and two 50s. We all loved the original and afterwards stayed in the theater hall discussing our likes and dislikes.

I grew up watching Disney movies in the theater with my four children and BatB has always been my favorite.

My main dislike is the actress playing Belle. She looked too tomboy. I mean come on, Belle is the most beautiful girl in any town for miles. Gaston, a self-absorbed jerk, who is very superficial and stuck on his looks, picks this "odd" person because of her BEAUTY. There were some other girls in the town who I thought way more attractive then Belle. I'd rather they found a beautiful, good actress who couldn't sing and dubbed her singing parts. The point being, she's supposed to be the "Beauty" part of the title.

I agree with others about the Beast needing to be scarier. I was OK with the CGI, but show the fangs more, especially the two large ones. When his mouth was closed he just looked like a hairy man, as far as his face goes.

I thought the castle and all the other cursed characters looked grand.

Some said they'd wished the father had shown Belle what happened to her mother. To me, Belle was already endeared to her father, why need another scene to show that? Having the Beast give her this most important "gift" was one of the things that really added weight to her falling in love with him. He specifically brought her the book and asked her where SHE wanted to go, NOT where he would like to take her.

I was OK with Evans portrayal of Gaston, I only wished he were a bigger guy. Gaston was a giant of a man, "bigger then life" kind of a guy, a great hunter. Sometimes he looked lost in the crowd, when he should have stuck out like a sore thumb.

I liked the movie and will see it again.

Defintley did not the actress who played Belle. She should have had a different look. Gaston should have been bigger, reminds me of the character that played Tom in the Great Gatsby. The beast was not scary enough, and Gaston was not a big enough jerk early on. Some of the scenes were rushed and the music didn't seem to flow as well as the cartoon. The bookstore scene in the beginning should have been longer and actually in the store. That was a huge part of the story. Why would they take that out. Overall, good movie that I will watch a few more times. Now that I'm used to the new characters I'm sure that I will enjoy future views much more.

Yess! Exactly! I get that he turned out to be a controlling abusive type, but he didn't seem too bad in the beginning to warrant how adamantly Belle and her dad rejected him...in my opinion. He was like a jerk-lite, not an uber-jerk incapable of even comprehending that anyone wouldn't fawn over him, like in the cartoon

I'd Change:

1) The Beast Face needs to look more scary, CGI let down here

2) Different actress for Belle. One other problem with Emma is that she still looks like a 15 yr old underage woman. And she is very tomboy in her manner. I think they needed to find someone more girlie and breathtaking beautiful to be Belle and who looks a little older. I just can't see Emma as Belle. She is this cute tomboyish female. For some strange reason, I expect Belle to look like Claire Danes in Romeo and Juliet.

3) I'd love more dialogue about Mrs Potts missing her husband and would like to know what the Clock thinks of his wife.

I'm fine with everything else. Over all, they did a brilliant job.

Emma Watson's auto-tuned vocals...

That's what my daughter said after we left the theater. It's Disney, you'd think they would dub her with a real singer.

And where do you find a big enough guy to play that role. "Animated" Gaston is much easier to create than a live-action one. If you want this one big enough to match the animated version, he'd have to be CGI, or someone in prosthetics to match the original's size, and then he'd end up looking fake and corny. Luke Evans was large enough for the role. His arrogance and demeaning attitude is what made him larger.

I didn't say he had to be an equivalent to a cartoon. As you say that would look fake and corny. I'm saying there are plenty of large men in movies, body builders come to mind. Arnold in his youth (though his accent was too heavy for such a part) visually fit the look. He looked gigantic in Twins next to all the other actors/extras (and I don't mean little Devito). In that movie he was considered a specimen of a human who got all the best traits, size wise especially. That's what I think of with Gaston.

I'm not saying Arnold, I'm saying a guy his size in this photo.

Perfect example; I googled tall actors and Clint Walker was one from way back. 6' 6" 48" chest, 32" waist.
Someone like him in a tight fitting shirt like the cartoon Gaston wore would have looked enormous next too everyone. He even sang.
Clint Walker

Gaston in red shirt

the triplets LOL!

The 3D ... it was awful ... I hope one day Disney starts filming in 3D and stops this postconversion crap :(

Overall I liked the movie - but not the look of Lumiere. The hand painted Lumiere was so much more lovely.

At the end of "Beauty and the Beast" song WHY WAS THERE NO "OFF TO THE CUPBOARD WITH YOU NOW CHIP. IT'S PAST YOUR BEDTIME. GOOD NIGHT LOVE." FROM MRS. POTTS TO HER SON?!?! It was a perfect way to end the song in the animated film, wished they kept it here.

Also that hand thing they did at the final dance scene in the castle was... weird.

Also, I'm not complaining exactly but i love how the Beast turned into Jesus. LOL.

It's a shorter list for me to say what I would have kept, so I'll do that instead:

-the new arrangement of Mob Song (sounded extra creepy)

-Belle getting clobbered by the snowball (funny change for those who've seen the cartoon)

-though I didn't like the enchantress being there at the end and changing everybody back, I did think all the enchanted objects becoming inanimate sad.

I think Luke did an decent job as Gaston but somebody brought to my attention that Henry Cavil would have been a better Gaston. Not sure if he can sing tho. Le fou was probably the best adapted character.

Yeah I'm gonna have to pass on Emma. Kevin Kline did a good job as well.

As far as the beast, I like that they gave him more personality. Dan did a good job. However, I felt he might have been a bit too old. The look & design of the beast was not good. Yes, I agree he should have been more scary & they should have went with prosthetics and tweaked it with a lil bit CGI.
