Discuss The Bad Batch

This was a crazy film experience for me. I think it was in my recommend, so I decided to watch it. Right off the bat I was underwhelmed due to the distopian future and canabalism (I'm sure that's the intent). It seemed (and seems) a childish film in many ways, but also a real art-house feel. The first actor I recognized in it was Giovanni Ribisi, and I kept doubting it was him because of the character. I often wonder if it is an actor I know, or an actor who resembles an actor I know. Anyway, I stayed the course. At the introduction of "The Dream", again I was underwhelmed. It all seemed like such childish nonsense, and a bit too 'on the nose' for my taste. It wasn't until later, in the pool scene, that I realized it was Keanu Reeves. Now the film had my attention. I was trying to figure out how such an offbeat and bizarre film had drawn the talent. Now, I know what you may be thinking: how could I not recognize Jason Momoa? I figured he might be somebody, but to be honest, I'm not really a huge fan of his (obviously). It's not that I don't like him, it's just that I wouldn't know him. Ironically, I think his brutal size could very well work against him as an actor. Now fast forward to the scene where "Miami Man" and "The Hermit" are having the knife-for-snowglobe exchange. I'm watching, and as the camera lingers on The Hermit's face, and I'm reading his expressions, I begin thinking: that might be some well-known actor too. Or maybe just an unknown who is really bringing it to the part. I mean I was really staring and thinking (sadly, distracted from the film). Anyway, I finish the movie, trying to decode it's confused narrative and structure. Credits roll. Then I decide to wait for the actors to verify my suspicions (I was only really confident it was Keanu Reeves). I was stunned to find that "The Hermit" was Jim Carrey! Like so stunned that I couldn't believe it! So I went back to a couple of scenes with The Hermit and once you know you can't unsee it!

To be honest, I'm glad I didn't know who the cast was going in. It would have changed so much of the experience for me. Props to the costume, makeup and effects people...while the story itself was confused, they created a fantasy landscape that was so convincing as to hide many well-known celebrities from me. 6/10.
