Meryl Streep's vocal performance reminded me of Sissy Spacek's turn as "Verna Vane" in "Verna: USO Girl" (1978), a much smaller TV movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQiIiZC28ok&t=36s (I found it disturbing and saddening that this film can't be found here on the TMDb, but at the IMDb and YouTube!)
