So we found out that the weird chick from "The Breakfast Club" is basically the legendary Spidey love interest "MJ", I think (her first name was Michelle instead of Mary). My complaints about this have nothing to do with the lack of red hair. I actually thought it was ingenious to turn Michelle into MJ in the film. My big problem is Peter Parker's lack of interest towards Michelle in the entire film. Peter should carry some sort of torch for Michelle/MJ that gets quickly extinguished by the "MJ" weird chick, that gets redirected towards "Liz". One thing I dread about a Spidey sequel is that they give Michelle a makeover that makes Peter fall head over heels. The problem of MJ from the very beginning, imo, is that she is this perfect chick that Peter fascinates over. It makes Peter's love for MJ a bit superficial if his love for her stems from her makeover. Having said that, I always thought that the Peter Parker and MJ storyline was a bit weak. The thing that I do feel is important about MJ is that she remains a "distant dream" who helps keep Peter independent and balanced.
Edit: I do want to say that I never cared for MJ in the many incarnations that were conceived prior. Even in the cartoons, I was rooting for Felicia Hardy's "Black Cat". I truly do feel that MJ needs re-imagined for Peter Parker. MJ should be on her own independent rock that Peter Parker looks upon that helps him along his path.

The MJ thing was just a joke. Zendaya's character name is Michelle Jones, and thus MJ. I believe, she was originally supposed to play Peter's friend from the comics, Michelle Gonzales, but they decided to change her last name as part of the joke. They have no plans to make her the Mary Jane of the new Spider-Man movies. The director Jon-Watts, casted Zendaya soley because he wanted, as he put it, an Allison character (from the Breakfast Club) in the movie.

Well that's what people get when they put too much attention on a joke. Makes the joke teller to want to push it further. Especially, while Amy Pascal is in charge.
