He plays Dr. Waldman in this movie. Also, perhaps most famously, Professor Van Helsing in Dracula.
Being on camera as himself in the intro, with no character makeup or glasses, and with his own regular hairstyle, and such bright stage uplighting on his face, results in him looking nearly unrecognizable to viewers of today. It's Van Sloan though.

I thought that might have been him, but he seemed younger with rounder eyes.
