Imagine if the same character traits from Toy Story 4 were applied to Woody and the gang in the first film. They would have spent the first act devising a plan to destroy Andy’s birthday party, sabotaging the children’s vehicles in some nightmare pileup out in the street. By the third act, they would gotten Sid put in prison or simply killed. By lasers.
In the Toy Story universe the toys are charming and passive to the world around them. In this film they flaunt themselves in public, cruising around crowds of people in strollers and robotic animals, and speak aloud to humans when the flimsy plot demands it.
This was D-grade Dreamworks storytelling.
